SSP Neupane’s last rites held

Aug 26, 2015- The last rites of slain Senior Superintendent of Police Laxman Neupane took place at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon. His funeral was accompanied by ceremonial gun salute performed by Nepal Police personnel. Hundreds of people were in attendance. 
Neupane’s body was airlifted to Kathmandu and was kept at the Gaushala Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle at Gaushala where Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam, Inspector General of Police Upendra Kanta Aryal, among others, came to pay their tribute.
In a first major attack on high-ranking law enforcement officer after the peace process, SSP Neupane was killed while on duty during the Tharuhat protest at Tikapur in Kailali district on Monday.
The chief of Seti Zonal Police Office, Neupane was seized by the protesters while trying to convince them to stage their demonstration peacefully. Nepal Police
said that Neupane succumbed to the wounds inflicted by spears.
Neupane had joined Nepal Police as inspector in 1988. He was promoted to the SSP rank in 2010. He assumed the role of Seti zonal police chief only a year ago.
A native of Chandragadhi, Jhapa, Neupane was a popular figure in his home town. Neupane’s brother Pradip remembered him as a brilliant student, and his colleagues as a tolerant officer.
“He handled each challenge skilfully,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police Nawaraj Silwal, who is of the same batch as Neupane.
Former Additional Inspector General of Police Nawaraj Dhakal said SSP Neupane was very sharp in dealing with investigations. “He used all his professional skills while
investigating many cases,” Dhakal said.Neupane is survived by a wife, a son and a daughter.

Slain officers promoted
The government has decided to promote police personnel who were killed in Tikapur on Monday. A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening elevated them to an upper rank.
Seven police personnel including Senior Superintendent of Police Laxman Neupane had died on duty during the violent clash with Tharuhat protesters. The government, however, has not decided the compensation amount to be provided to the bereaved families.
The Cabinet also formed a committee headed by Deviram Sharma, former chief of the National Investigation Department, to investigate the Tikapur incident. Other members of the committee are AIGs Jiwan Thapa and Pratap Thapa, Ganesh Adhikari of the NID and Binod KC, a joint-secretary at the Home Ministry. The meeting also decided to resume the supply of essential goods that has been hit by a prolonged Tarai shutdown. (PR)
